What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a non-invasive medical therapy where you breathe nearly 100% medical-grade oxygen inside a pressurised chamber. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes and are supervised by trained clinical staff.
Depending on clinical requirements, chamber pressure increases to 1.5–2.5 ATA, allowing more oxygen to dissolve into the blood plasma and significantly increasing oxygen availability at the cellular level. This helps deliver oxygen to tissues affected by swelling, poor circulation, injury, disease, or hypoxia.
HBOT is used for selected medical conditions, including diabetic foot ulcers, radiation tissue injury, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness. It is also being investigated for neurological recovery, sports rehabilitation, Long COVID, and healthy aging.
At Intact Vitality, we clearly distinguish between established clinical applications and investigational uses from the initial consultation.
Why HBOT Is Different
More Oxygen. Greater Availability. Faster Healing
Under normal conditions:
- Under normal atmospheric conditions (1 ATA), we are breathing around 21% oxygen.
- Haemoglobin is the most important carrier of oxygen in the blood & that's already saturated with Oxygen upto 98-99% (in red blood cells).
- Only minute quantities of oxygen dissolve in plasma
- When tissue is damaged or swollen, it frequently does not get enough oxygen to heal.
During Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy:
- Inhalation of almost 100% medical-grade oxygen
- Chamber pressure is set between 1.5 to 2.5 ATA (as clinically indicated)
- The oxygen can be raised by as much as 22- 25 times depending on the treatment pressure.
- RBC's are not required for oxygen to get to tissues
- Swollen, damaged, less-than-adequately-perfused tissue can be well oxygenated.
It is not a fine distinction. Oxygen will act differently in the body under the pressure, allowing it to get to places that the normal circulation can’t. The core mechanism of HBOT is not applicable in the absence of the pressure component.
The Science of Oxygen
Enhanced oxygen availability during HBOT may support:
Tissue oxygenation
Physiological conditions that allow healing to begin can be restored in tissues that are hypoxic (lacking oxygen) due to injury, vascular disease or inflammation.
Angiogenesis
HBOT creates new blood vessels in areas of tissue that lack oxygen. This can contribute to improved local circulation over a course of treatment, rather than just additional oxygen during treatments.
Collagen synthesis during wound healing
The structural protein collagen is the key to tissue repair and is a product of the fibroblast, which requires oxygen for its production. When oxygen is limited, healing of wounds becomes stalled. HBOT provides these cells with what they need to work.
Fibroblast activity
HBOT provides an environment that allows fibroblasts (the cells responsible for the development and maintenance of connective tissue) to operate more efficiently, thus aiding in the structural scaffolding of the healing process.
Recovery following selected injuries
As part of a comprehensive treatment regimen, HBOT can enhance tissue oxygenation, manage inflammation and facilitate cellular repair, potentially shortening recovery time after some injuries.
Cellular energy production
Mitochondria require oxygen to function. Increased oxygen also can help the body produce energy, which is important for physical recovery as well as brain function.
Healthy inflammatory regulation
Evidence indicates that HBOT could help to balance the inflammatory response of damaged tissues, which is relevant to acute injury and chronic inflammatory conditions.
Physiological recovery
HBOT may support faster recovery, reduce fatigue, and improve training readiness. It may also help manage oxidative stress, support telomere lengthening, boost immunity, and increase stem cell mobilization by up to 8X.
HBOT is used in addition to, not in place of, proper medical care, rehabilitation, exercise, nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Clinical Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Where clinically appropriate, our physician-led Clinical HBOT programme could be considered for selected conditions such as:
• Wounds that do not heal and chronic wounds
• Diabetic foot ulcers
• Radiation tissue injury and osteoradionecrosis
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Air or gas embolism
• Decompression sickness
• Crush injuries
• Selected compromised skin grafts and flaps
Treatment recommendations are tailored to each individual and follow guidelines from the FDA and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS).
HBOT for Diabetic Foot Ulcers
One of the most severe conditions associated with long-term diabetes is diabetic foot ulcers. Because of poor circulation and a weakened immune system, these wounds often do not heal well with standard therapy and may take months to heal. If left uncontrolled, they may become deeply infected, involve bones and result in amputation in severe cases.
HBOT is an FDA-recognized adjunct therapy for diabetic foot ulcers that has ample clinical evidence. Diabetes leads to diminished blood flow and therefore blood to the wound tissue is always oxygen deficient; bacteria flourish, the immune response is muted and the structural healing process is stalled. HBOT does just that.
HBOT increases the oxygen available to the cells in the wound area, which helps:
• The basis of structural tissue repair, fibroblast activation, and collagen synthesis
• Improved responses to infectious disease
• Angiogenesis: formation of new blood vessels in ischaemic tissues
• Decreased swelling after infection
If you have had a wound that has not made progress, a clinical assessment is well worth having.
HBOT Protocol for Radiation tissue injury
Radiation therapy is very effective, but the damage to the tissues can be permanent. Chronic pain, non-healing wounds, and loss of function are the results of radiation-induced tissue injury and osteoradionecrosis (bone involved) that can manifest years after cancer treatment is completed.
HBOT is one of the few clinically known treatments for radiation tissue injury. HBOT provides the tissue with high levels of oxygen and makes it possible for the tissue to become chronically hypoxic and fibrotic after radiation, yet still heal.
It is one of the most well-supported uses of HBOT, accepted by the FDA and UHMS and one that Intact Vitality has first-hand clinical experience with.
HBOT for Post-Surgery Recovery
Surgery places significant demands on the body, with recovery relying on effective tissue repair and oxygen delivery. HBOT may support healing by improving oxygen availability to areas with reduced circulation, helping manage swelling and support wound recovery.
HBOT is FDA-cleared for compromised skin grafts and flaps, while evidence for broader post-surgical recovery remains emerging. Treatment is coordinated with the operating surgeon based on the procedure, wound, and individual health needs.
Sports Performance & Recovery
Our Athlete Recovery Programme combines HBOT with cutting-edge recovery techniques and is designed to aid:
• Sports injury recovery
• Faster recovery between training sessions
• Reduced post-exercise fatigue
• Return-to-sport programmes
• The capacity to accommodate training sessions and/or experiences at any given time
• Optimising muscle recovery and performance
• Reduced Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)
• Faster soft tissue and ligament repair capabilities
• Improved cognitive functions such as reaction time, recall time, muscle-mind coordination, and much more
Suitable for: Professional athletes, runners, cyclists, footballers, cricketers, combat sports athletes, CrossFitters, and fitness enthusiasts.
HBOT for Sports Injury & Athletic Recovery
Recovery is essential for serious athletes, helping the body rebuild efficiently between training sessions. Sports injuries can reduce oxygen supply to swollen or inflamed tissues. HBOT may help bridge this gap by delivering high-concentration oxygen to affected muscles, tendons, and ligaments, supporting the recovery process.
HBOT can aid in recovery during a recovery course by:
• Swelling and inflammation are reduced in less time
• Muscle tears, ligament sprains, tendon injuries and soft tissue injuries can be structurally repaired.
• Less post-exercise fatigue in high-intensity training blocks.
• Better readiness for sessions from session to session
• Return to sport in shorter periods after major injury
At Intact Vitality, our Sports Recovery Programme combines HBOT with Red Light Therapy, PEMF, and physiotherapy. HBOT’s performance-enhancing effects remain under study, and individual responses may vary.
Neurological Wellness
Our Neurological Wellness Programme is designed to be part of a larger wellness plan that covers:
• Clear thinking and mental sharpness
• Concentration and performance of the brain
• Executive cognitive resilience and concentration
• Healthy brain aging
These services are tailored to the individual and are not a substitute for specialist neurological care.
HBOT for Brain Injury (TBI)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) may leave surrounding brain tissue chronically hypoxic and functionally impaired without permanent damage, sometimes described as “idling neurons.” Studies suggest HBOT may support cognition, mood, quality of life, and neuroplastic recovery by improving oxygen delivery to peri-injury tissue.
HBOT is not FDA-approved for TBI, and evidence remains emerging. At Intact Vitality, it is used only as part of a broader rehabilitation plan in coordination with neurological and rehabilitation teams.
HBOT & Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke can cause lasting problems with movement, speech, and thinking. Preliminary studies suggest HBOT may support chronic-stage stroke rehabilitation by improving oxygen availability to damaged but viable brain tissue and promoting neuroplasticity.
HBOT is not FDA-approved for stroke rehabilitation; evidence is still emerging, and outcomes vary. Programmes are developed alongside the patient’s neurological care team with realistic expectations.
Longevity & Healthy Aging
HBOT is just one of the many factors that many people use in their longevity program along with nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, and preventive health care.
Focus areas include:
• Healthy ageing and physical vitality
• Active lifestyle support
• Health of the cell and overall health
As you get older, your body’s ability to recover decreases.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Anti-Aging & Longevity
Longevity medicine is gaining scientific interest, and HBOT is no exception. A 2020 Israeli study (Hachmo et al.) reported changes in key markers of biological aging, including telomere lengthening and reduced senescent cell burden, following a structured HBOT protocol in healthy older adults. These findings have increased interest in HBOT’s potential role in reverse aging at the cellular level, although further research is needed.
Patients at Intact Vitality also report near-term benefits such as increased energy, better sleep, and sharper mental clarity. HBOT is not a standalone solution but part of a holistic longevity programme, with transparent consideration of the current evidence.
HBOT for Chronic Fatigue
One of the most challenging symptoms to effectively treat is fatigue that does not go away. HBOT’s potential role in chronic fatigue is due to its ability to enhance mitochondrial function, which is central to cellular energy production and its potential anti-inflammatory effects (which may relate to some types of fatigue syndromes).
There have been some patients who have experienced manifest gains in energy and mental clarity after a supervised HBOT course. They are building evidence, and responses from individual countries are different. If someone has gone through the standard options and hasn’t gotten enough relief, it’s worth talking with them about HBOT as an adjunct that is carefully monitored.
HBOT for Long COVID Recovery
Long COVID can cause persistent symptoms such as debilitating fatigue, cognitive fog, breathlessness, and post-exertional malaise (PEM), significantly affecting daily life. A 2022 randomized controlled study reported improvements in cognition, energy, sleep quality, and overall quality of life with HBOT compared to a sham control group.
At Intact Vitality, patients are thoroughly assessed, with sessions carefully paced around PEM and guided by evolving evidence and realistic expectations.
Executive & Corporate Wellness
The demands of modern professional life are unique and include chronic cognitive strain, poor sleep, frequent travel and little opportunity for organized recovery. The deficit accumulates over time.
Our Executive Wellness Programme incorporates HBOT, recovery assessments and additional therapies for:
• Focused mind and concentration
• Recovery of energy and stress
• Quality sleep and prevention of burnout
• Rehab travel and executive wellbeing
• Cognitive resilience and productivity in the long term
Designed for: Founders, entrepreneurs, executives, CXOs and high-performance professionals.
Who Should Avoid HBOT?
HBOT is not for everyone. At Intact Vitality, screening is not optional; it is standard, as it is essential to know if there are any contraindications to the treatment that will be provided.
⚠️ Absolute Contraindication
The only absolute contraindication mentioned in the international guidelines for hyperbaric medicine is untreated pneumothorax. HBOT can not be safely done if the lung has not been treated for collapse.
⚕️ Relative Contraindications
• Upper respiratory infections, sinusitis, ear surgery, or a perforated eardrum may increase pressure equalisation and barotrauma risks.
• Chronic obstructive lung disease and a reduced seizure threshold require careful assessment before HBOT.
• Pregnancy is generally avoided except in life-threatening emergencies under specialist guidance.
• Medication suitability is reviewed before treatment, and support is available for claustrophobia where needed.
ℹ️ Common Side Effects
• The most common occurrence is ear pressure or discomfort during pressurization and depressurization, which can be alleviated through simple pressure-equalization maneuvers similar to those used during air travel.
• Temporary change of near vision, usually returns to normal at the end of treatment.
• Ear pain with changes in air pressure.
• Protocol design reduces the risk of oxygen toxicity seizures to a minimum, which makes them very rare.
If you are not sure if any of the above apply to you, discuss this at your consultation. We would much rather discuss it openly “behind the scenes” rather than assuming.

Common Questions About HBOT
Everything you need to know before starting your Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy journey.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a non-invasive medical treatment in which you breathe nearly 100% medical-grade oxygen inside a pressurized chamber. At elevated pressure, oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma at concentrations far above normal, reaching tissues with compromised circulation, swelling, or reduced oxygen supply.
Is HBOT Safe?
When provided following appropriate medical screening and supervised by trained clinical professionals, HBOT has a well-established safety profile. Serious complications are rare. The most common experience is mild, temporary ear pressure during the session, similar to what you feel during air travel.
How Long Does an HBOT Session Last?
Most HBOT sessions last between 60 and 90 minutes inside the chamber. Including preparation, pressurization, and depressurization, the full appointment typically runs 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Is HBOT Painful?
No, HBOT is non-invasive and generally very comfortable. Most patients experience only temporary ear pressure during pressure changes, which resolves quickly with simple equalization techniques.
How Many HBOT Sessions Will I Need?
It depends on your condition and goals. An approved clinical indication such as a diabetic foot ulcer may require 20–40 sessions. Wellness and performance programmes typically involve 10–20 sessions. Your personalized plan is determined at your initial consultation based on a thorough clinical assessment.
Can HBOT Be Combined with Other Therapies?
Yes, HBOT can be integrated with Red Light Therapy, PEMF, Far Infrared Therapy, IV Drip Therapy, and physiotherapy as part of a personalized care plan, depending on your individual condition and goals.
Who should not receive HBOT?
The only absolute contraindication is an untreated pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Relative contraindications include certain lung conditions, ear pathology, some medications, pregnancy, significant claustrophobia, and active respiratory infections.
What should I wear during my HBOT session?
100% natural cotton clothing; we provide this. Synthetic fabrics, perfumes, petroleum-based products, and hair products are not permitted inside the chamber due to fire safety requirements in an oxygen-enriched environment.
Is there any downtime after a session?
None. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately. Some report feeling particularly clear or energized following treatment, though individual responses vary.
Can HBOT help with Long COVID?
Research into HBOT for Long COVID is active and has produced some promising early data. A 2022 randomized controlled trial published in Nature showed significant improvements in cognition, energy, and quality of life in Long COVID patients receiving HBOT.
Is HBOT the same as breathing oxygen from a mask or concentrator?
No, Standard supplemental oxygen is delivered at normal atmospheric pressure. HBOT adds pressurization, and that is what enables oxygen to dissolve into the plasma at therapeutic concentrations. Without pressure, the core mechanism that makes HBOT effective does not apply.
